Why vitamin D is important

Vitamin D plays a key role in supporting your health, including your immunity and calcium absorption. This essential vitamin is mostly produced in the body by sunlight hitting your skin, but it’s also found in some foods and a variety of dietary supplements.

How vitamin D is produced

Vitamin D is produced in the body when sunlight hits your skin. Most people in Ireland should be able to get all the vitamin D they need from sunlight between March and September, when the days are longer and there are more hours of sunlight.

However, if you spend a lot of time indoors, or during the winter when the days are shorter, you may not be able to get all the vitamin D you need from sunlight alone. This means you may want to add a vitamin D supplement to your diet.

Where vitamin D is found

Vitamin D is also naturally present in some foods like red meat, oily fish and egg yolks. It’s also often added to foods such as non-dairy milks and breakfast cereals.
